What Do They Wear Under There?

"What do those Supreme Court judges wear under their robes? Declassified government Polaroids, next on Sick, Sad World."

So, what do Supreme Court judges wear under their robes? Based on snapshots of West Virginia State Supreme Court Chief Justice “Spike” Maynard, the answer may be “the appearance of impropriety.”

It seems good ole Spike went on a little vacation in Monaco, in circumstances bearing no resemblance to a day working underground in a coal mine, with a man named Don Blankenship. Mr. Blankenship was the CEO of Massey Energy, the company that controls the West Virginia coal mine industry.

Now who do you think Spike is going to pay more attention to the next time Massey ends up in front of his bench- those filthy penniless hippie environmentalists, or his old buddy Don from the beaches and casinos of Monaco?

Who do you think is going to be a more compelling litigant in his eyes- a hard-working coal-miner dying of black lung, or the pal he spent so many relaxing sun-soaked days with?

The thing that's killing this country right now is the connection between money and power- the oligarchy. Whether companies like Massey make any improper offers to judges or not, the sight of pictures showing the Massey CEO vacationing with the chief justice of West Virginia's supreme court raises the question of impropriety. They suggest that the answer to the question “what do Supreme Court judges wear under their robes” might just be a sign saying “Bought And Paid For.”

A world where coal-miners toil under the earth and develop black lung while their boss is off in Monaco sporting with the state's Chief Justice- well, it's a sick, sad, world!
